Story Writing Lab Joins Texas Tech Accelerator 2026

During customer discovery for my first product, I kept hearing the same thing from teachers: their students didn’t want to write anymore. They put in the least amount of effort possible, and no amount of prompts or assignments seemed to change that.

I heard that same story over and over again.

It happened while I was talking to K-12 educators as part of the customer discovery process for Wise Owl Teacher, an AI-powered grading tool I built after watching my wife, a college professor, spend countless evenings and weekends buried in essays instead of living her life. (You can read the full story on the Wise Owl Teacher About page.) The grading problem was real, but as I kept talking to teachers, I kept hearing something upstream of it. Students weren’t writing with care. They weren’t writing with voice. They were writing to be done with it.

The difference between students who write because they have to and students who write because they want to is exactly the problem Story Writing Lab was built to close.

What Is Story Writing Lab? A Creative Writing Game for K-12 Students

Story Writing Lab is an educational game designed to help K-12 students rediscover creative writing and genuinely enjoy it.

The core belief behind the platform is simple: when students are motivated and care about their craft, they get better at writing because they’re invested in it. Engagement drives improvement. Passion drives skill.

This isn’t another grammar drill or writing prompt generator. Story Writing Lab is designed to ignite student motivation for creative writing from the inside out, giving teachers a tool that doesn’t just assign writing, but makes students want to write. For educators who are tired of fighting for every sentence their students produce, it offers something different: a platform where writing feels like play, not punishment.

The Road to the Texas Tech Accelerator 2026

I won’t pretend the path here was a straight line.

My relationship with the Texas Tech University Innovation Hub goes back further than Story Writing Lab. Last year, I competed in the Accelerator Competition with Wise Owl Teacher. That experience, pitching in a room full of sharp people asking harder questions than you expect, taught me a lot about what it means to validate a product, communicate a problem clearly, and build something investors and educators can both believe in.

When I came back with Story Writing Lab, I brought those lessons with me. We refined the concept, sharpened the problem framing, and kept showing up inside the Innovation Hub ecosystem until the idea was ready to stand on its own.

On June 1st, 2026, it did. Story Writing Lab was named one of 13 startup teams selected to join the Texas Tech Accelerator’s 10th Cohort, alongside ventures working across healthcare, sustainable agriculture, public safety, and more. You can read the Innovation Hub’s full announcement here.

For an edtech startup focused on student writing motivation, this is a meaningful validation and a real launchpad.

Why Student Writing Motivation Is an Edtech Problem Worth Solving

Student disengagement from writing is one of the most persistent challenges in K-12 education today. Teachers know it. Administrators know it.

What’s often missing isn’t more curriculum. It’s motivation. Students who don’t care about writing won’t improve at it, regardless of how many rubrics or assignments they encounter. The leverage point is engagement, and that’s precisely where Story Writing Lab operates.

Being selected for the Texas Tech Accelerator 2026 means we now have the resources, mentorship, and runway to bring this creative writing game to more classrooms, more teachers, and more students who deserve to discover what writing can do for them.

What Comes Next for Story Writing Lab
